This was a piece of laboratory test equipment for a major research organisation for the testing of scalpel blade penetration into flesh.
This rig had a gimbal base plate for mounting flesh, which was lockable in various positions. A scalpel blade would be locked to a carrier and raised to the desired eight.
Weights were added depending on customer requirements, the guard closed, and the blade carrier released. The blade would then freefall into the flesh. A linear encoder was used to measure the penetration point and stopping point of the blade.
There were no electrical items on this rig, and to make the unit safe to operate the release arm could only be pulled when the guard was closed.
